Install/Update Thunderbird 17.0 in Ubuntu 12.10/12.04

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open source, cross-platform email and news client developed by the Mozilla Foundation.

Features of Thunderbird 17

  • A Menu Button is now shown to new users by default
  • Tabs are now drawn in the title bar on Windows
  • RSS feeds can now be viewed in the Wide View Layout
  • Various fixes and performance improvements
  • Various security fixes
  • Mac OS X 10.5 is no longer supported

To install Mozilla Thunderbird 17 in Ubuntu open terminal (Alt + Ctrl + t) and type following commands

Step 1: Add Thunderbird Repository

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-stable

Step 2: Update sources.list

$ sudo apt-get update

Step 3: Install Thunderbird 17

$ sudo apt-get install thunderbird

That's it , you have successfully installed Thunderbird 17. To check Thunderbird version, type following command in terminal

$ thunderbird -v
Thunderbird 17.0
