Install/Update Firefox 15 in Ubuntu 12.04/11.10/11.04

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser developed for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux coordinated by Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Foundation. Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine to render web pages, which implements current and anticipated web standards. As of July 2012, Firefox has approximately 24% of worldwide usage share of web browsers, making it the third most widely used web browser.

New in Firefox 15

  • Silent, background updates.
  • Support for SPDY networking protocol v3.
  • WebGL enhancements, including compressed textures for better performance.
  • Localization in Maithili.
  • Optimized memory usage for add-ons.
  • Native support for the Opus audio codec added.
  • The audio and video elements now support the played attribute.
  • The source element now supports the media attribute.
  • Focus rings keep growing when repeatedly tabbing through elements.

To install Mozilla Firefox 15 in Ubuntu open terminal (Alt + Ctrl + t) and type following commands

Step 1: Add Firefox repository

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

Note: If your are using Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 you can skip the above step.

Step 2: Update sources.list

$ sudo apt-get update

Step 3: Install Firefox 15

$ sudo apt-get install firefox

Check Firefox Version by running following command in Terminal

$ firefox -v
Mozilla Firefox 15.0
